Hello!
From the CSR team, we would like to introduce the environmental efforts of the Sustainable Activity team.
Up until now, we have been using biomass power as part of our green energy※ efforts, but we are pleased to announce that we have decided to switch to hydroelectric power. Here are the details of our initiative!
Past Efforts
Newport has been paying a premium on top of our regular electric bill in order to utilize biomass power for our office power. However, we have decided to transition to hydroelectric power starting in 2024 to reduce environmental impact.
Biomass power, while renewable, requires energy and resources throughout the processes of biomass production, processing and transportation, which raised concerns about its environmental impact.
In contrast, hydroelectric power generates almost no CO2 emissions during the electricity generation process, and requires less energy for facility construction and maintenance, making it a lower environmental burden. Additionally, hydroelectric power is well-suited to Japan’s geography, allowing us to leverage existing infrastructure, which made it a fitting choice for our sustainable energy strategy.
Moreover, we have already completed the purchase of green energy for the period from April 2024 to March 2025. We have secured 30,700 kWh of hydroelectric power at ¥4.5 per kWh through "Green Pokke Light" (a power plan offered by Japan Natural Energy KK.), achieving sustainable energy procurement.
Future Outlook
Building on these decisions, we will continue research to further explore energy-saving and sustainable options. In addition to existing sources like hydroelectric and wind power, there is potential for discovering new technologies and methods of power generation. We remain committed to exploring optimal energy strategies, balancing environmental conservation with cost reduction.
As such, Newport will continue to strengthen its commitment to sustainable energy procurement and fulfill our environmental responsibilities as a corporation.
※What is Green Power?
Green power refers to electricity generated from renewable energy sources. These include solar, wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal energy, which are sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. Green energy significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions like CO2, thus contributing to the prevention of global warming. Newport actively integrates the use of green power as part of our pursuit of sustainable choices.
